Senior Web Developer - Front End (Science)

What We're Looking For

The Natural History Museum’s purpose is to inspire a love of our natural world and to help unlock answers to the big issues facing humanity and the planet. We are now embarking on a new digital strategy in support of that purpose, which aims to use digital technologies, platforms, and devices to significantly grow the number of people engaging with the Museum and its work, providing exceptional online experiences for everyone from those curious about nature to professional scientists.

In order to deliver our strategy we are looking for a Senior Web Developer (Front End) to work on the Museum’s public facing digital experience.

The Senior Web Developer will work within the Science product team in the Digital Media and Marketing Department, reporting directly to the Lead Developer. This team is directly responsible for inspiring action through engagement with our science. They create compelling digital products that connect the public directly to the work of Museum scientists. The Senior Web Developer will collaborate with developers, UX and Visual Designers, Product and Content Managers and colleagues in the Marketing teams, as well as Platforms Engineers and Software Developers in the Technology Solutions department.

The Senior Web Developer will provide technical leadership in the application of front-end technologies across a range of products for the Science team, including websites, web apps and other customer interfaces. They should have proven experience in developing with online identification and SSO solutions, public-facing online forums and web applications.

Maintaining awareness of emerging front end technologies and line-managing other developers in the team, the Senior Web Developer will also help the Lead Developer to coordinate code releases and ensure best practices are followed.

Hands-on front-end development skills will be expected in HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript and Git. Experience with responsive design and CSS pre-processors (e.g. Sass) is expected, as well as experience working in an Agile (Scrum/Kan-Ban) environment.

A strong knowledge of JavaScript frameworks, technologies and templating languages along with usage of RESTful API’s is extremely beneficial.

Salary: £36,000 to £41,000 per annum plus benefits

Contract: Permanent
